Harvest Moon Forums
Courtship, Marriage & Children
Meet the love of your life~.

Unlike most of the Harvest Moon games, there are 5 events for each available bachelor or bachelorette--and most of these are triggered by leaving your house or talking to the person.

The Five Events:
  • Home Visit 1: 2 hearts. You'll receive an item.
  • Lunch Date: 4 hearts. The person will ask you to lunch. Girls want you to meet them at the beach around noon, while guys want to meet you at the Kirsch Inn around noon.
  • Request: 5 hearts. The person needs something from you or wants you to do something for them. You can take your time in getting the item, but you can't marry until you've completed the request.
  • Home Visit 2: 5 hearts. You'll receive another item.
  • Confession: 6 hearts. The person will tell you to meet him/her under Alan's tree, near Brownie Ranch. Get there ASAP (morning or early afternoon; before 10AM is the best) and he/she will tell you that he/she is in love with you.

You can also get the first home visit event with people of the same gender as you. Occasionally, the game may get confused and think you're friends with people whom you aren't friends with. (In Marie's first file, Chase came to visit and gave her guy an egg even though she'd never met Chase!)

Rival Events
The events themselves are in another section, but be warned: You have fierce rivals for some of the bachelors/bachelorettes!! The rival couplings are:
Jin & Anissa
Toby & Renee
Chase & Maya
Calvin & Phoebe
Julius & Candace
There are only 2 rival events for each couple, so it's best to completely ignore your rival for your intended spouse. The first event occurs when the person who is the same gender as you are gets to 2 hearts, and the second is when the person gets to three hearts. (For example, in Jin and Anissa's case, if you're playing as a boy, then their first event will occur when you get Jin to 2 hearts. But if you're playing as a girl, then it will occur when you get Anissa to 2 hearts.) It's quite possible that a rival couple (or two, or more) will marry before you can marry!

Request Events
The only heart events that are tricky are the request events. Sometimes the person will ask you for a rare item.

MayaEel (unagi/ウナギ)Maya wants to make unagi-don, a rice dish topped with eel. Go fishing in the river. Eels are relatively rare but can be caught in the middle or lower parts of the river in every season but Spring.
KathyN/AKathy doesn't appear to have one. Instead, you need to have the horse racing mini-game. You can play the game once you have Kathy to 6 hearts. If you win, Kathy will kiss you~.
SelenaN/AGo to the southern island, Ohtori. There talk to Sue, Selena's mother. Sue will mention Selena and ask you to take a message back to her. So go back to Waffle Town and talk to Selena. Then go back and talk to Sue to complete the event.
PhoebeRare MetalGo to the 10th floor of the Ganache Mine. Phoebe needs Rare Metal for something. Rare Metal is found in the sparkly "mare" (マレ - rare) ores. Get one (you can probably find one on the 25th floor of the mine), take it to Miori for inspection, and then give it to Phoebe.
Candace & LunaBlue Mist FlowerThe item for the sisters is the same. Luna accidentally stained a new outfit that Candace made for her, and now Luna wants to dye it blue with a Blue Mist Flower. If you're going for Candace, Candace wants to give Luna the flower as a gift. You can buy the seeds for these in the fall from the Souffle Farm. You can't give anything to Candace or Luna if they're sitting down and knitting, so be sure to give the flower to the girl who asked you for it while she's standing.
ReneeN/AWhen you clear the first Harvest Sprite, Dana, go to the windmill at Brownie Ranch. The wind is blowing, so the windmill is turning again! This event counts as Renee's request event.
AnissaSnowdrop FlowerYou can either grow this flower yourself in the winter, or buy one from Candace during the spring or summer flea market. Anissa is kind enough to provide you with the seeds, but it's easier just to buy a flower from Candace.

CalvinAppleTrigger this event by going to the 10th floor of the Ganache Mine. You can buy the apple from the Souffle Farm in the fall or buy one from Simon during the spring or summer flea market. Sometimes you can find an apple while foraging on Gull Island. ATTENTION: If you experience a glitch where your game freezes during trying to trigger this event, please call Natsume at 1-650-692-1941
GillGill's DiaryGill dropped his diary while on a walk through town. Across from the Kirsch Inn is a small plaza with a shipping box. There's a sign just behind the plaza. Gill's diary is behind the sign.
OwenN/AOwen wants you to get down to the bottom of the Ganache Mine. Once you do (there are 30 floors), go back up and talk to him. Or he'll meet you there. I'm not sure exactly what happens there.
Luke20 Wood LumberTalk to Luke in the little wooded area near the carpentry. He wants you to collect 20 pieces of wood lumber.
ChaseA Home-made DishThis one sounds hard but it's not really that difficult. Chase doesn't really care about the dish itself, but rather how many dishes you have made and shipped. You have to make about 40 dishes and ship them, then bring him something you made. Unfortunately, Chase does realize the difference between shipping a dish that you bought and shipping one that you made, so beware. If you just keep making and shipping dishes, occasionally giving him a dish, you should be able to clear it. Fish dishes and vegetable dishes are the easiest to make. Check the cooking page to see what dishes would be easiest for you to make. Note that soups do not count.
JuliusRuby or SapphireBoth of thOwen gems can be found in the Ganache Mine. The 25th floor is a great place to look for gems. Any coloured balls that sparkle contain a gem. Go talk to Miori to see if any of the red or blue balls contain a ruby or a sapphire. You can cheat by looking in your inventory: A red ball with 3 sparkles on it likely contains a ruby, while a blue ball with 2 sparkles probably has a sapphire.
TobyRock Lobster (iseebi/イセエビ)You can catch one on Gull Island, but only in the winter and spring.
JinPontata RootYou can find these using your hoe in the mines. Sometimes you can find one while hoeing on your land, too.

Marriage

Once you have a potential spouse to 8 hearts and have cleared all of the person's events (including the request event), you can marry. But you'll need a Blue Feather in order to propose...

Getting the Blue Feather. The day after you get a potential spouse to 8 hearts, Herbal will come by your house to visit. He'll tell you about the legend of the Bluebird of Happiness, and that a feather from the bluebird is the traditional marriage proposal item.

A few days after Herbal's visit, exit your house to get a scene in which you see the Bluebird of Happiness flying up toward the Caramel Waterfall area. The number of days between Herbal's visit and seeing the bird seems to be random. Once you get the event, go to the Caramel Waterfall area and walk past the waterfall. You'll get another scene with the bluebird, and you'll find a Blue Feather right at your feet!

Proposal. Once you've gotten the Blue Feather, give it to the person you wish to marry on a sunny or cloudy day. (Since most of the scene takes place outside, you can't propose Owen on rainy or snowy days.) You'll automatically go to the town square to talk about it, then to the town hall to announce it to Herbal. Herbal will then ask you when you'd like the wedding to be. You can choOwen one of two options: "Sooner is better" (option 1) or "Love lasts forever" (option 2). Herbal will then tell you what your wedding day will be. If you say "Sooner is better," your wait for your wedding could be anywhere from three days to three weeks (approximately; thOwen are the two extremes Marie has seen).

Wedding Ceremony. On the appointed day, you will immediately be transported to the church and the ceremony will begin. Like in Magical Melody, you can say "yes" or "no" when it comes time to say the vows, but that won't change anything.

After marriage, your spouse will live with you in your house. Your spouse's daily schedule will also change, but he/she will go out and do things outside the home during the day (unless it's raining or snowing).

If you're playing as a girl, your spouse will continue to work at wherever he worked before marriage. If you're playing as a guy, your wife quits her job (if she had one before) but often spends a lot of time in one of the shops around town, one which you'd never see her at before marriage. (Example: Maya goes to the Souffle Farm, Luna to the Kirsch Inn, etc.)

Pregnancy. This happens the same way whether you're playing as a guy or a girl: Two seasons after marriage, the wife will wake up feeling ill, and the husband insists that he'll take her to the clinic. The wife doesn't want to go, but she gives in and lets her husband take her. Irene examines her to see what's wrong, and tells you that there's no need to worry: she's going to have a baby!! Irene tells you to be careful and then you'll go back home.

Prayer to the Goddess. One week after the pregnancy event, your spouse will ask you to go to the church with him/her to pray for the safe birth of your child. Say that you'll go. Once there, your spouse will ask you what you'd prefer: A boy? A girl? Or would either one be fine? If you say you want a boy (option 1 - 男の子) that means that you will have a son. If you say you want a girl (option 2 - 女の子) then that means you'll have a daughter. If you say that either one is fine (option 3 - どっちでもいい) then you have a 50% chance either way.

Childbirth. One season after the pregnancy event, the baby will be born! The wife will stay in bed in the morning and will tell you that the baby's coming, and you'll automatically rush her to the clinic (or, if you're playing as a girl, your husband will realize what's going on and rush you to the clinic). Soon after you arrive, the baby will be born, you can name it, and then go home. Irene will have a baby bed delivered to your home, as a gift from everyone at the clinic. The mattress on the bed will be pink if your child is a girl, and blue if it's a boy.
(I didn't take any pictures of the childbirth event with Maya, which explains why all the pictures up until now were of Maya, and suddenly, here's Luna!)

Child. You can have only one child, but there are a total of 10 different children you can have, depending on who your spouse is. (There are a total of five boys and five girls.) The child's looks will always take after the Mayan character, but the child's personality will resemble that of the other parent.

However, from the time they're born to the time they turn 1 year old, the child looks more like the generic mouse-suit baby of the previous games. This first year, though, is a good time to begin your relationship with your child. Plus, you get an event each season.

1 season after birth: crawling. Your child will begin crawling 1 season after birth.

2 seasons after birth: walking. Your child will start walking 2 seasons after it's born. Now he/she will go outside by himself/herself, but won't go far.

3 seasons after birth: first words. Your child will begin talking 3 seasons after birth.

1 year after birth: fully grown. Your child certainly isn't an adult, but he/she will not grow any further. Once your child reaches his/her first birthday, the child can help you with farm chores (watering, harvesting, gathering eggs and raw silk, or milking). You can also take a walk with your child, which can boost your friendship with the child (depending on how far from home you go and when you return home). He/she will follow you wherever you go.

Your child will be one of ten different children, depending on your spouse (and the child's gender). Here's a couple of tables with basic info on each child.
